How much does homeschooling/unschooling cost?

Can you answer Jacob L’s question about Homeschooling?:

I’ve been reading up a bit on unschooling, and it seems like the right path for me to follow. I’m trying to compile research to come to my dad with, so that i can hopefully answer all of the initial questions he may have. My question here is what sort of fees are associated with unschooling, mostly as in fees to the state and mandatory costs. I live in Alabama, if that helps.

Homeschooling Feedback: why not try virtual school? its exactly like regular school, except you take course at home. they’re funded by the state like regular school, so they’re free

Homeschooling Feedback: It depends on what curriculum you go with. Be prepared to spend in the range of 3-500.00 per year at least.

Homeschooling Feedback: Well unschooling is self directed (I unschool), so it all depends on what you want. It can cost anywhere from absolutely nothing to thousands of dollars a year. We usually spend between 2 and 500 dollars per year at best.

Homeschooling Feedback: Try a virtual school. Those are free and much more easier because the classes are sent to you and don’t require too much demand from your parents.

Homeschooling Feedback: Have you read the Teenage Liberation Handbook? It’s all about unschooling; and from what I understand, there’s no real “curriculum” that you’re following, so calculating costs would be quite difficult.

Fees to the state? There are none, unless you count property taxes to support schools you don’t use.

Homeschooling Feedback: There usually aren’t any state fees or mandatory cost. however AL is one of the hardest to home school in. You must either enroll in a religious umbrella school or hire a certified tutor.

Your best bet is to find local groups to speak with. Try checking yahoo groups
